Clinical Skills Competency Requirement

As part of the Phlebotomy Technician Program, all students are required to demonstrate proficiency in blood collection techniques. Clinical competency is measured by successful completion of live patient procedures, as outlined below:

  • Venipuncture (venipuncture sticks): Minimum of 30 successful draws on live individuals.
  • Capillary puncture (finger sticks): Minimum of 10 successful draws on live individuals.

These requirements align with the eligibility criteria for the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam. Students must complete these procedures under instructor supervision and maintain a documented log of all successful attempts. Only documented, supervised successful procedures will count toward meeting this requirement.

Failure to complete the required number of successful procedures may result in the student being ineligible to sit for the NHA certification exam and may require additional clinical practice under instructor guidance.
